Serves as the scientific arm of Singapore's food safety system by conducting food safety testing, food safety related R&D and studies, risk assessment of foodborne hazards and for pre-market approval of novel and GM food, risk communication and monitoring of emerging food safety risks. Functions as National Reference Laboratory on food safety and manages SFA's third party Laboratory Recognition Programme.
